Blood and Steel by Ravien93 Blood and Steel by Ravien93
Animated work in progress is available on my blog! :)

UPDATE. I fixed her arm, sort of. I am sick to the tits of this drawing, I just can't work on it any more. I spent more time redrawing that arm than the rest of the piece, I hope it just looks slightly better and doesn't assault your eyes any more.
I had to get rid of the axe. I now regret it, she looked cooler wielding two axes. Awkh weeeeeellll! Instead of wasting my time fixing old mistakes I'll just keeping moving and hopefully my next piece will be better than this one.

Anyways, inspired by warrior nord chickas, and Etain from Centurion. Mostly Etain though. I'm really into 'wintery' stuff recently. I'm gonna play some Skyrim now.

Reference: [link]

Dirt brushes, fur brushes and blood splatter brushes too, I'll link them soon. And sheitload of textures.

First of all, congratulations for one more great piece, Anna!

The first comment I have to make is about her face: great facial construction, she's not "just one more female warrior on DA". She could be real. Her expression is really good, and I specially loved her lips, amazingly painted.

Now, about the other parts (get ready, critique!)
I know, from your other paintings, that your foreshortening tech is pretty good. That's why I think you probably lost so much time with her face (and maybe the fur, it always drain us!) that you got tired when you were going to paint her arms.

Her right hand is cool. The blood well spread XD I would add a little tension to it, as the axe is in movement (I guess)

The left hand, that certainly is in movement is the part that... kind of bring down the quality of something that could be a masterpiece. It feels hurried, like you just painted anything and used some blur effect. This effect can't hide that he arm has no anatomy, and that the hand is just an egg of ink. You gotta paint it all.

Next time, don't post your art until you're done with every part of it. Even if it's just loose strokes, they have to be well placed, respecting anatomy and the foreshortening thechniques I know you know so well!

I hope you'll fix this part, and make it into a piece that will certainly go into my best favorite ever!

The detailing is great Anna how long did you spend and did you use photos or brushes for the texturing?! :la:

I kinda feel like there are some lighting mistakes here, but then i'm no master... yet xD The reflection of lighting on the metal as an example is a bit too dim. Her sword hand needs to be bigger as it's closer to the camera (compare it to her Axe-hand) Perhaps in class one day, you can show me how to paint hair so well! the overall picture is amazing but there are a few thing that need ironing out as you already stated. Her face seems really bright in comparison to the rest of her skin so maybe boost the lighting on those areas, or add more colour to her face :)

Great Piece of work! :icongreatjobplz:

This one took me hoooours! I would say around 30h in total, if not more, although I did spend most of the time crying over her stupid arm. I made an animated gif of my work in progress on my blog (and wrote a rant! ;P), you can find it here [link]
Also, this tutorial is great for texturing skin, it's sooo simple, but makes a huge difference. It adds a nice cinematic touch. :)
[link]
I used some random metal textures and dirt brushes to make her all muddy/bloody, although I think I've overdone it a bit. I also used fur brushes to make her coat 'fluffier' although they were only used in the final step, it took a lot of erasing and moving things about to keep them from looking too unnatural. I also sharpened the fur once I was done with it to make it less blurry.

Sure thing man, I just need a tablet that works and the ones in labs don't seem to have any pens. ):
I made a hair tutorial awhile ago, but my technique hasn't changed in the slightest, so maybe you'll find it useful. [link]
Even though this one was painted in colour, I still made her hair black/white, painted it and then overlayed colour, I just find that I can fit in more detail by going with black/white. :)

It's full of inconsistencies, I totally agree with you. I might come back to it once again some day but for now I'm exhausted by it haha! I am never ever attempting foreshortening without a decent reference. This one was pure hell! :XD:

She is so badass, a true Nord woman. I love her face, she's got her own kind of beauty (and, behold, clothes! xD). And if she looked at me like that weilding those weapons there'd be a me-shaped hole in the first door I encountered. :+fav:

I gotta say I love this piece. I loved it even before you fixed it. Do you know how hard it is to find awesome art of warrior women who aren't 'half naked super model with a weapon' types?? I hope you do more like this.

I actually used to be one of the people who enjoyed drawing scantily clothed chicks too much, but recently I'm really getting into the proper, real deal stuff. I still do enjoy it from time to time, but they're just sketches, they never get finished any more. I'm really glad you like it, thanks for your comment. :)

XD this is gorgeous. i'd offer critique if i could, but seeing as i'm not even half-as good as you, i feel like it would be a blasphemy of some sort for me. =P again... the stark lighting on her face. beautiful! and her hair... <3

Hmm... I think it's the angle, actually. The bend of the wrist is off. I think foreshortening is one of the greatest challenges in 2D art. It makes it SO hard to make the anatomy look right.
On the flip-side, the face is awesome (I mean it, I'm a little in awe.) due to both the realism and the expression. The texturing is pretty brilliant too - particularly on the wolf-fur cloak, the leather pauldron and the hafts of the axes.
